FAQ's

1) I'm not sure I have a story, should I still get in touch?

Yes, please do! E-mailing or chatting to us initially puts you under NO obligation to proceed any further. But, by at least contacting us, we will be able to tell you whether you have something suitable for publication. We will only contact all the publications once you are happy.

2) If the publications are interested, how will I know which magazine or paper to go with?

It depends on how many and which ones are interested. If there's more than one, we will guide you through and advise you on your best options. But ultimately, the choice is yours. It may be that you want to appear in the publication offering you the most money. Alternatively, you may have a specific title in mind or wish to reach a certain audience. We will work with you to ensure all your wishes are met.

3) Can my story be used without my permission?

Definitely not! True-To-Life Features abides by the PCC Code Of Practice and is committed to the very highest standards of journalism. We are qualified in all aspects, from media law, to shorthand, to article writing. Nothing you tell us can be used without your permission. It will remain strictly confidential, until you express otherwise.

4) Do I have to tell you absolutely everything?

Only details you have told us about can be printed. If there is something you don't want to appear, then don't mention it! However, for every true life story, certain details are mandatory, such as names, ages, dates etc.

5) How will the interview be done?

Normally, it is carried out over the phone as this is the easiest and swiftest way. Once we have found a publication for your story, a member of True-To-Life Features will arrange a convenient time to call you. We will then ask you all the necessary questions to allow us to write your story. However, we would be happy to send a writer to your home to carry out the interview in person should you prefer.

6) Do I have to be photographed?

Yes. ALL publications require pictures of those involved to go with the story. You may be asked to choose a selection of your own or the publication may wish to come and take one of you (they will arrange this with you). Stories can ONLY be done anonymously where identifying a person would pose a serious risk such as in sexual offence cases. However, even then, the person does have the right to waiver their anonymity.

7) How will I know what's been written?

We will go through the story thoroughly with you, enabling you to make any changes you want, before passing it on to the magazine or newspaper. They will then be in touch and will check with you further so that you are 100 per cent happy with it before it appears in print. Upon request, your story can be read back to you before it's published.

8) Will I have to sign anything?

Yes. Most publications will ask you to sign a contract. But don't panic. This is simply to ensure that you will be doing your story exclusively with them until it has been published. It is also for your benefit, so you have written confirmation that you will get paid the agreed fee and that the publication will do what it states.

9) What happens about getting paid?

The publications vary with their payment systems. However, it is generally four-six weeks after publication.
